Esther and Ezra

Chronology between Esther and Ezra

In academic chronology, the timeline shifts from the Persian Diaspora (Esther) back to the restoration of Jerusalem (Ezra-Nehemiah).
1. The Reign of Xerxes I (Esther)
The events of the Book of Esther occur during the reign of Xerxes I (Ahasuerus), roughly 486–465 BCE. This period takes place after the first wave of returnees under Zerubbabel (538 BCE) but before the missions of Ezra and Nehemiah. It represents a “middle period” where a significant Jewish population remained in the Persian heartland while the Temple in Jerusalem stood rebuilt but the city walls remained in ruins.
2. The Mission of Ezra (c. 458 BCE)
In the seventh year of Artaxerxes I (successor to Xerxes), Ezra the Scribe leads a second wave of returnees to Jerusalem. His focus is the implementation of Torah law and the spiritual reorganization of the community. Chronologically, this is approximately 15 to 20 years after the conclusion of the Esther narrative.
3. The Mission of Nehemiah (c. 445 BCE)
In the twentieth year of Artaxerxes I, Nehemiah is granted permission to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. This occurs roughly 13 years after Ezra’s arrival. The combined efforts of Ezra and Nehemiah solidify the Second Temple period’s administrative and religious infrastructure.
Chronological Sequence:
  • 538–516 BCE: First Return and rebuilding of the Temple (Zerubbabel).
  • 483–473 BCE: Events of Esther in Shushan (Xerxes I).
  • 458 BCE: Ezra arrives in Jerusalem (Artaxerxes I).
  • 445 BCE: Nehemiah arrives to rebuild the walls (Artaxerxes I).
