This Torah Focus looked at some of the educational systems of the 1st Century. We also looked at Yeshua within the Rabbinic mindset and framework. We took an informal approach to these subjects seeing what we can learn about Yeshua, the Talmidim and the Rabbis of the 1st century.

In this class we begin to take a more in-depth look at the structure of the First Century Synagogue.  In looking at the structure of the Synagogue we look at the role that Yeshua may have played in the locale Synagogue.   Yeshua read the Haftarah passages in the service. What else could he have done during this service?

In this class we delve deeper into our investigation of Yeshua in the Synagogue.  We review Edersheim’s book “Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah” as a means for understanding all that happened in the Synagogue that Shabbat morning.  Then we begin looking at theother prayers and activities he was involved with in the Synagogue.

What happened to the Haftarah reading of Yeshiyahu (Isaiah) 61:1-2?

In this class, we continued our study on the Shema and how this prayer was used in the time of Yeshua.
We further studied various scriptures to be able to place the time line of Luke 4:16-20.  What happened to the Haftarah reading of Yeshiyahu (Isaiah) 61:1-2? We discuss the problems and look tom ancient sources to find our answer. We further our discussion with Zechariah 8:23 and the possibility of this passage of scripture actually being fulfilled in these days.

Tonight 05/21/2009 we will continue our study series on concerning prayers that were relevant during the time of Yeshua.  We will continue with Yeshua in the Synagogue looking at the Siddur and it reading in the time of Yeshua.

Also note: We will be using the Artscroll Siddur (Sefard) Weekday/Shabbat/Festival to help facilitate our understanding of these prayers. If you have the Siddur (Prayer book) it will be helpful. In this class we look at Yeshua in the Synagogue.  Luke Chapter four sets Yeshua in the Synagogue reading the Haftaerah passages from Yeshiyahu (Isaiah). 61.  It seems plausable that these passages are Yuval (Jubilee) passages.  What all did Yeshua do in this service.  We look at Alfred Edershiem’s book “The life and Times of Jesus the Messiah” to discover the secrets of Yeshua Shabbat experience in this Synagogue.

In this program I begin moving forward in my discussion of the Pirke Avot. Likewise, we explore the idea that Yeshua and his talmidim were acquainted with the Mishnaic ideas of their day.

Who were the Men of the Great Assembly? We discuss who they were and their identities. I discuss Ezra the Torah teacher and a Member of the Men of the Great Assembly. Ezra restores the Torah to Yisrael. Hillel the last of the Zugot (pairs) equals the character of Ezra because he too restores the Torah to Yisrael.

Avot 1:2 Shimon the Righteous was among the last surviving members of the Great assembly. He would say: The world stands on three things: Torah, the service of G-d, and deeds of kindness.

From here I move into the 4^th Mishnah which reads

Avot 1:4 Yossi ben (son of) Yo’ezer of Ts’raidah and Yossi ben Yochanan of Jerusalem received the transmission from them. Yossi ben Yo’ezer used to say: Let your house be a meeting place for the sages, cleave to the dust of their feet, and drink thirstily their words.”

I begin discussing the 5 Zugot (Pairs). The First set of pairs being found in this Mishhnah. The final set of pairs being Hillel and Shammai. I discuss why the Torah was passed on to the Zugot. I further explain the characteristics of the Zugot and their relationship to the Sanhedrin’s two key figures, the Nasi – President of the Sanhedrin and the Av Beit Din (Father of the House of Judgment). I deal with this pattern as it is seen in Hillel and Shammai in the times of Yeshua and his talmidim.
