‍‍15 Av 5771 - August 14, 2011 By: Dr. Walter Oakley Category: Mesorah of Mark, SyndicateA4, Torah Focus, Triennial Torah Reading

Torah Focus Class – Mesorah of Mark 106A

The 106th pericope of Mordechai (Mark). We looked at the connections to the Torah Seder, the Ninth of Av, the Sabbath of Vision (Shabbat Hazon) and asking the following questions.

  1. What was Yeshua actually doing on Har Zeytim (Mount of Olives) when he prophesied the Temple’s destruction?
  2. Why did Moshe meet with the “heads of the tribes” in B’Midbar 30:2?
  3. Why does Yeshua call Shimon “Tsefet”?
  4. Is the name Tsefet found in scripture?
  5. Are we on track with the Triennial Torah readings?
  6. Are we on track with matching the Nazarean Codicil with the Torah reading and time?
  7. Does this Torah Seder and pericope of Mordechai match the special Shabbat reading of Yeshayahu 1:1-27?
  8. How does the vision of Yesha’yahu and Yermi’yahu, read over the past weeks differ?
  9. How does this Gemara b. B.B 3b relate to the “Vision” of Yesha’yahu?
  10. If we are not permitted to destroy even a Synagogue how does G-d answer for allowing the Temple to be destroyed?
  11. If a Synagogue cannot be destroyed unless a greater one is built, would Messiah come back to build that same Temple which was destroyed in the First century?

The following materials will be needed for the class

Mesorah of Mark 105 E

This week’s Mesorah of Mark class was divided into two discussions.

The first Discussion was the Torah in Time.

Here I looked at the way we relate to the Torah. The Torah is said to be a prophetic overview of the week.  I discuss how this relates to both the Triennial Torah Reading schedule and the Annual Schedule.

The Second discussion will look at the prophecy of Yeshua, Mark  13:1-2. In this section of the class I looked at the relation of Yeshua’s prophecy to the Prophetess Hulda. The simple question was, How is the prophecy of Yeshua (Mark 13:1-2) related to the prophecy of the prophetess Huldah?

This Torah Focus looked at Mark 12:28-34  In this pericope of Mordechai Yeshua discusses the relative mitzvot which deals with the Shema and loving ones neighbor. Of course this was not new to Rabbinic thought.  Some questions to ponder for tonight’s class will be…

  1. How did Yeshua and the Sofer (Scribe) find common ground when Bible scholars suggest that Yeshua was opposed to and by all the Soferim.?
  2. Were there any further commonalities between Yeshua and this Sofer?
  3. Were other Soferim present?
  4. What is the most important mitzvah of all?
  5. We ask these questions and several others.

We looked a may relative facets of the Torah Seder and its presented ideas along with connections and things concluded in the Torah Seder.

Rosh Chodesh Tammuz

Rosh Codesh Tammuz

In this Torah Focus class we looked at the connections between the 104c pericope of Mordechai, Rosh Chodesh Tammuz and pericope 105a of Mordechai.  We only briefly touched on the 105c pericope of Mordechai as that will be next week’s lesson.  However, we looked at Tammuz at a prophetic statement.  What prophetic statement does Tammuz make?  What fast is associated with Tammuz? And, how does all of this relate to me personally.  Find the answers in this weeks Torah Focus.

The following translation will also be discussed in the Torah Focus class.

Colossians 2:16-23

16. Therefore let no one [who is a Gentile] but the body of Messiah (the Jewish people) pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a New Moon or a Sabbath.  17. For these are a shadow (prophecies) of things yet to come.  18. Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of messengers [i.e. the sun and the moon], going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind,  19. and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God. 20. If with Messiah you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to [pagan] regulations–  21. “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch”  22. (referring to things that all perish as they are used)–according to human precepts and teachings?  23. These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.1

Mesorah of Mark Series Connecting the Torah and the Nazarean Codicil

This Mesorah of Mark looked at the 104c pericope of Mark. This material is weighed against B’Midbar 22:2-23:9, which contains the story of Balaam and Balak. How does the story of Mordechai 12:18-27 where the Tz’dukim (Sadducees) present the story of the seven brothers and the resurrection. What is the real focus of this pericope? We delve into all of this material and much more.

Torah as Life and Devotion

‍‍26 Sivan 5771 - June 27, 2011 By: Dr. Walter Oakley Category: Mesorah of Mark, Torah Focus, Triennial Torah Reading

The Rabbis have taught the Torah study is equal to prayer.1 Devotional and application of Torah is different from the western way of reading and interacting with the Torah. Hakham Shaul described the Torah as a living book.2 Torah is not a book read from a Western perspective. The Torah is a book this learned for the sake of living what is recorded therein. The Rabbis further stated that study of the Torah without practice was absurd.3 While there were those, who were concerned with “faith vs works” the true talmid is concerned about “Learning and doing.” 4 When the Torah is studied and applied, it purifies the soul. Consequently, Jacob Neusner and Yeshua both derive the restoration to Eden and the androgynous man.

A Gentile Question

Midrashim – with Dr. Walter Oakley

Program #22 – A Gentile Question

“A Gentile Question.” What does the Gentile have to do to inherit the olam haba?

I continue to use the Mishna (Pirke Avot – the Sayings, Chapter or Ethics of the Fathers) as a tool to illuminate the world of Yeshua and His talmidim.

I begin talking about the fourth pair of the Zugot (pairs) Shemayah and Avyalyon. These men who received the Tradition of the Torah were descendants of Gentiles.

Pirke Avot 1:10-12

Our discussion uses Yoma 71b to illuminate the lives and circumstances of Shemayah and Avyalyon’s lives.

This passage in the Talmud discusses the confrontation between these Teachers and the Cohen Gadol on Yom Kippur. These two men suggest that the heathen who does the “work of Aaron” will come in peace. This phrase is a synonym for entrance into the Olam haba (world to come). I discuss the descendants and work of Aaron.

I discuss the 2nd chapter of the Book of Malachi. 2:1-6.

These passages discuss the work of Aaron and the covenant of peace established with Levi.

I further elaborate on Shaul’s phrase concerning “living sacrifices” from his letter to the Romans Chapter 12.

Counting the Omer

Torah Focus – with Dr. Walter Oakley
Counting the Omer – Keys to Spirituality

In this class we look at the Counting of the Omer from Vayikra (Leviticus) 23:15ff as a means of understanding the process of spiritual growth and maturity.

We contrast Peasch and a picture of being born into the Kingdom with Shavout (Pentecost) the receiving of the Torah at Sinai. Pesach teaches us to come to faith in G-d through Messiah.  Sinai teaches how that those who have come to faith should conduct themselves.

This is a positive class with a positive view of how the Torah is supposed to affect the life of the Believer.
